Adoption Information and Process

Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescue dog!

Sadly, over 4 million pets are euthanized in shelters every year. By choosing to adopt, you are saving two lives: the dog you adopt and the life of another dog in need of his/her space in a foster home.

What is Sioux Falls Canine Rescue's Adoption Process?

If one of our rescue dogs have stolen your heart and you would like to begin the adoption process, please follow the steps listed below.

Step One: Fill out and submit an adoption application. You can find our adoption application under the Forms/Applications tab on our website. Once we receive your application, we will review it, call all of your references, etc.

Step Two: Once your application has been approved, we will contact you to set up a home visit and meet and greet. This gives you the opportunity to meet the dog and us the opportunity to see where the dog could be spending the rest of its life. This is a very informal meeting, we want everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed. We want you to see the true personality and demeanor of the dog and we also suggest that you have all members of your family present, including other pets. New additions may not be accepted right away, but we want to make sure everyone can "get along".

Step Three: Once the meet and greet and home visit have been completed, we give both parties 24 hours to think about the possibility of the adoption. We want everyone to make sure it is the right fit for the dog and the family.

Step Four: Adoption day. On adoption day, you will fill out microchip registration for your new family member and pay the adoption fee, we accept cash or check. We will also send you with all of your new family member's vet records and a goodie bag. Congratulations!

Why adopt from Sioux Falls Canine Rescue?

There are several things that set Sioux Falls Canine Rescue apart. Aside from our excellent service and response time, the quality of care our dogs receive while they are waiting for their forever families to find them is top-notch.

  • Thoroughly screened foster homes who receive endless support, training and resources.
  • We have an unparalleled post-adoption support system in place. Once you adopt from Sioux Falls Canine Rescue, you'll always be a part of our family and we'll be here to support you and answer any questions you may have!
  • A self-imposed limit to the number of dogs we allow in a foster home. You will never find a Sioux Falls Canine Rescue foster home over-run with dogs.
  • You won't be able to take a Sioux Falls Canine Rescue dog home with you until they've been in one of our foster homes for a minimum of 7-14 days. Why? Because we know that it takes a dog a few days to settle into his/her new environment and show his/her personality. We want to be comfortable in our own knowledge of the dog you're interested in adopting so that we can ensure the best match between dog and family.
  • ALL OF OUR DOGS are in foster homes, NOT boarding facilities, NOT kennels, NOT cages. In homes, living with families.

How long does the adoption process take?

Keeping in mind our organization is run entirely by volunteers, we do our very best to begin processing your application upon receipt. If we have any questions regarding your application, we will contact you first. Typically though, we will proceed with contacting your personal references and veterinarian before we get in touch with you. Depending on your availability, and ours, it may take a couple of days to complete this process. Please have patience. We know you are excited, and we are excited for you, but we are committed to placing the dogs in our care into wonderful, loving, forever homes.

How much does it cost to adopt a rescue dog?

Our rescue dogs are priceless to us, as they will be to your family. To help with our operating costs we require non-negotiable adoption fees that vary. Our adoption fees are generally between $200 and $450.

These fees rarely cover the entire cost of the medical treatment your dog receives while in rescue. The adoption fee goes towards the high cost of veterinary care for our rescue dogs.

If you cannot afford the adoption fee, you probably cannot afford to care for a dog.

Please remember, the adoption fee is considered a donation and it goes toward the care of the next dog waiting in line.
